IMS - Intramuscular Stimulation

What is IMS or Functional Dry Needling?

These terms are often used interchangeably, and involve inserting a tiny monofilament needle
into a muscle by a physiotherapist that has trained specifically in this area. The needle insertion
results in muscle changes that improve function and pain. This technique is supported by
research as an effective treatment to improve acute and chronic pain, reduce muscle tension,
and rehabilitate after an injury. In some cases, it is used to prevent injury and improve athletic
performance.

Is it the same as Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a practice in Traditional Chinese Medicine used to restore the balance of energy
along the meridian pathways in the body. IMS is based on an anatomical and medical-based
model of treatment. Needles are inserted into affected muscles to relieve pain, restore
function, and improve movement. Although the needles used are often the same, how they are
used involves a different approach and technique.

What are the benefits of IMS?

When a needle is inserted into tight a muscle, this causes a relaxation effect. This increases the
resting length of the muscle and improves range of movement. As well, blood flow increases,
which aids healing. Chemical changes also occur in the body impacting our nervous system,
which decreases our body’s sensitivity to pain.

What can I expect during and after treatment?

The number of areas treated depends on the individual and injury. When the needle is inserted
into an affected muscle, there may be a dull, aching, or cramping sensation. This is a normal
and desired response of the muscle. Sometimes there are immediate changes in movement or
pain relief, or it may take several treatments, depending on the severity or chronicity of the
condition.

As the needle does cause some local injury to the muscle, some soreness may be felt for one to
two days after treatment. This can be alleviated with heat or ice. Exercise after treatment is
encouraged, but easier and lighter is recommended, rather than a hard workout.
