Why choose Physiotherapy?
Have you ever wondered…what do physiotherapists actually do? And could you actually benefit from seeking treatment from a physiotherapist? Let’s see if we can shed some light on these questions…
Physiotherapy is a unique part of our medical system, where physios aim to improve the health of their clients without medication. This means they use things like exercise, hands on techniques, and education to empower clients to improve their own health. So yes, when you see a physio, you will usually get exercise homework!
In school, all physios are trained in the physical rehabilitation of many body systems, including musculoskeletal, cardio-respiratory and neurological systems. Physiotherapists work with people of all ages, from infants to seniors. They can be found in almost all departments of the hospital, from the medical ward and post-surgical care to the ICU and emergency departments. Physiotherapists also work in private practice (like Infinity Physio Centre), treating conditions that do not require hospitalization.
Physiotherapists ranked highest in job satisfaction, according to a 2008 survey conducted by the University of Chicago. We can take a few guesses as to why!! It is extremely rewarding to walk someone through their rehabilitation journey and see them return to their meaningful life activities. Bodies can also present very interesting “puzzles” for the therapists to solve, which keeps our brains working hard! As a client, it’s comforting to know you are in the care of someone who genuinely enjoys their job.
At a Physiotherapy Appointment
So what actually happens during a physiotherapy session?
Your first appointment is called your initial assessment. Your physio will have you perform a number of movement patterns, strength tests and other special tests in order to form a working physiotherapy diagnosis. They will discuss this diagnosis with you, and present a treatment plan based on their findings and your personal goals.
A physiotherapy treatment plan should include the types of treatment (such as manual/hands on techniques and exercises) as well as the frequency and number of treatments recommended. They will only proceed with this treatment plan if you, the client, are on board and give your consent.
Who benefits from Physiotherapy?
Anyone!
But more seriously, physiotherapists can help with so many different physical conditions. Anyone experiencing physical limitations to a meaningful task in their life will benefit from physiotherapy. Limitations can include things such as:
- Pain
- Restricted movement
- Neurological symptoms (pain/tingling/numbness) or conditions (post stroke/brain injury/spinal cord injury)
- Muscle weakness
- Vertigo/dizziness/loss of balance
- Post concussion syndrome
- Incontinence
- And many other reasons…
Can physios help with injury prevention?
YES!!
Physiotherapists are highly trained in analyzing movement. They can perform movement and strength screening to determine if you’re physically ready for your sport or job. This can be especially significant when thinking ahead to skiing or biking season! Just like we head to the dentist or doctor for regular checkups, it’s not a bad idea to schedule a regular check up with your physio.
